THAI NGUYEN (Tie-Win)
Inspired by his Vietnamese heritage while working with the flow of the fabrics, Thai Nguyen’s designs are romantic and ethereal with a touch of Eastern fusion.
Back in South Vietnam, where Thai was born, his parents owned a private sewing school. Whether it was the influence of his surroundings or not, at the age of nine, Thai learned how to sew and realized he had a passion for fashion. Thai and his family immigrated to America in 1993. Knowing the high stress and demands of the fashion industry, his parents had hopes of him choosing a different career path, but Thai continued to pursue his childhood dream. Thai graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in 2002. Following graduation, he earned the title of associate designer for BCBG Max Azria, which he held through 2004. Since then he has become the Vietnamese-American designer of choice for prominent Vietnamese entertainment production companies such as Thuy Nga (Paris by Night), Asia Entertainment, and Van Son Entertainment.
It wasn’t long before Thai made a name for himself internationally. Known for his convertible evening gown creations on the TV show, Thai was a finalist on Launch My Line, a reality competition show that aired on the cable television network Bravo in 2009. Thai was also a fashion designer/contributor on other Bravo’s hit reality shows including Rupaul’s Drag Race and Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Thai’s designs have graced many red-carpets including the Oscars and Grammy Awards while appearing in countless editorial magazines like Vogue Italia, Audrey, and Zooey. Celebrities Kristen Bell, Jamie Chung, Jenna Ushkowitz, Ruth Livier, Malina Moye, Shira Lazor, Adrienne Maloof, Brandi Glanville, Joanna Krupa, Lilly Ghalichi, and Crystal Harris have all been seen and adorned in a Thai Nguyen collection.
In 2008, Thai and his business partner, Helen Nguyen, established the showroom and storefront, Thai Nguyen Couture, in Orange County, California. The company offers Couture Bridal gowns, evening gowns, cocktail dresses, ao dai (traditional Vietnamese gowns), and a luxury ready-to-wear line. The company takes pride in working only with the finest textiles, having all the collections made exclusively in the United States, and believing that one should live for FASHION and set the TREND.
